Swipe Out Hunger: FoodShare Conference September 17
REGISTER NOW TO ATTEND the 1st ANNUAL WISCONSIN FOODSHARE OUTREACH NETWORK CONFERENCE!
Dear Friend of the Wisconsin Council of Churches,
Our communities continue to struggle to cope with the fallout from the economic recession. How can already overburdened churches, food pantries, service groups and others better help their neighbors in need?
One important and often underutilized resource is FoodShare, also known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (or SNAP). Congregations, food pantries, schools, libraries, community agencies and others can play a vital role in connecting people with this resource -- with relatively little additional effort.
On September 17, join the network of public and private community partners throughout the state who are committed to increasing FoodShare enrollment by integrating outreach activities into their daily business without taking on extra projects.
Who should attend? YOU – and everyone you know who’s committed to ending hunger in Wisconsin.
Why FoodShare? Despite recent increases to enrollment, only an estimated 67% of eligible households receive FoodShare benefits that not only put healthy, nutritious food on the table for our low-income families, children and seniors: the USDA estimates that every $5 spent with FoodShare generates $9.20 in local economic activity, additional resources that no Wisconsin community can afford to turn away.
Why is outreach so critical? Many of us interact with potentially eligible families and individuals every day: you worship with them at church, shop alongside them, use library services and attend school activities together. Each day brings us the opportunity to make our hungry neighbors aware of FoodShare, help them access benefits, and break the stigma long associated with "getting food stamps."
Connect with people from all walks of life who are committed to a hunger-free Wisconsin on September 17. A small amount of your time may leverage hundreds of dollars of food every month for families who need and deserve this help.
