Pastor of Worship & Pastoral Care
Dear People of God:
I read a piece from "The Gate of the Year" by Minnie Louise Haskins. In it she
says, "And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year: Give me a light, that I
may tread safely into the unknown." And he replied: "Go out into the darkness and put
your hand into the Hand of God. That shall be to you better than light and safer than
a known way." So I went forth, and finding the Hand of God, trod gladly into the night. And He
led me toward the hills and the breaking of the day in the lone East.
So, heart be still! What need our little life,
Our human life, to know,
If God has comprehension?
In all the dizzy strife
Of things both high and low
God hides His intention.
This little tidbit by M. L. Haskins reminds us that, even though the New Year is filled with unknown
happenings, the best thing that we can do to meet it is to place our life in God's hands, and He will
lead us through it.
As the Psalm writer says, "Lord, you have been my dwelling place in all generations; you, O Lord,
abide forever; Your throne is from generation to generation."
God will be with us in every generation, including ours, and in every year of that generation. May
He be with you personally, and may He be with Rosendale UCC in this new year.
Carroll Olm, who is retired from Fairhaven at Whitewater, one of our UCC institutions for the elderly,
said in one of his newsletters when he was still a parish pastor,
"As you face the new year......
Do more than exist: LIVE!
Do more than look: OBSERVE!
Do more than hear: LISTEN!
Do more than think: PONDER!
Do more than talk: SAY SOMETHING!
Do more than touch: FEEL!
Do more than read: ABSORB!
Do more than listen again: UNDERSTAND!
Do more than plan: ACT!
Do more than meditate: PRAY!
Our pastoral family who is with you each Sunday hope that you have had a meaningful, happy, and
joyous Christmas, experiencing the presence of our Lord in the anniversary of His birth, as well as
the joy of family and friends. As we go forward in the New Year of 2010, May God bless us and keep
us, and may He touch the work of our hands, hearts, and minds, so that faith and commitment may
grow.

Go Green!
Our vision of this E-Newsletter is to eventually go green, no paper printing! The electronic
version is more cost effective but more importantly you can received it quicker and it’s much
more colorful.
We do understand that not everyone has a computer or is computer savvy or comfortable using
the computer and perhaps does not know quite how to use it to it’s fullest potential.
Don’t fear, we can help. We can check out the computer lab at the Rosendale Intermediate
school to teach anyone interested in learning how to use your computer. This would be a basic
class where you sit at a computer and work with us step by step, then take what you
learn home and use it.
We will teach as little or as much as you want to know. We will focus on e-mail and the
internet for starters. How to send, received e-mails, open attachments, reply, forward to emails
and more. We’ll teach you how to search on the internet and find the information you
are looking for and what to watch out for.
If you are interested, please contact Darren Huff either at church on Sunday’s or 920-378-
1134. We won’t start the class unless we have adequate interest. If you prefer more of a one
on one teaching, that can be arranged too. Let me know, thank you.

Caroling we will go!
Oh the weather outside was COLD, the hearts were filled with Joy as the crazy arteries and
choir braved the cold and sang their hearts out to members and local folks and to anyone
who would listen. We ended our evening back at the church for some food, drink and
fellowship. The carolers were Dennis and Bonna Badtke, Pam and Norm Huff, Liz Rowe,
Eunice Huff, Joyce Boeck, Kent Kunz, Bob Quast, Frank, Janet and Brynn Johnson, and
Jackie and Darren Huff. What a fun time. Maybe you’ll join us next year.
Page 10 Church Mouse
The Arteries group (not a committee) was formed to pump “fun”
back into our church. It is meant for the sole purpose to organize
events and activities and to try and get people together as a church
family.
God does not want us to be alone and what better way to bring life
into our church then to have a good time with each other and sharing
in all that God has given us. If you like to help us out or have
ideas we certainly would welcome them. Are plan is to have
events/activities scheduled once a quarter. For more information,
talk to Gary Zibolsky.
The Arteries
If you have the next BIG idea
for our church, we want to
hear from you!
Thank You!
Thank you very much to the Council and to the church for the Christmas gift, the choir for
their gift and to the anonymous giver of the T-shirt. I appreciate the gifts so much and always
the kind words given all year long. Thank you all, Merry Christmas and have a happy,
healthy and blessed New Year.

Words of Christ
The Last Word
Spiritual gifts for serving God
by Rick Warren
Whoever does not have the Spirit cannot receive the gifts that come from God's Spirit. 1 Corinthians 2:14
(TEV).
You can't earn your spiritual gifts or deserve them -- that's why they are called gifts! They're an expression
of God's grace to you: "Christ has generously divided out his gifts to us." (Ephesians 4:7, CEV)
Nor do you get to choose which gifts you'd like to have. Paul explains that God determines that, "It is
the one and only Holy Spirit who distributes these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should
have." (1 Corinthians 12:11, NLT).
Because God loves variety, and he wants us to be special, there's no one single gift given to everyone,
and no individual receives all the gifts. If you had them all, you'd have no need of anyone else, and that
would defeat one of God's purposes -- to teach us to depend on each other.
Your spiritual gifts were not given for your own benefit but for the benefit of others, just as other people
were given gifts for your benefit. The Bible says, "A spiritual gift is given to each of us as a means of
helping the entire church" (1 Corinthians 12:7, NLT). When we use our gifts together, we all benefit. If
others don't use their gifts, you get cheated, but if you don't use your gifts, they get cheated. This is why
God wants us to discover and develop our spiritual gifts.
Whenever we forget these basic truths about gifts, it always causes trouble in the church. Two common
problems are "gift-envy" and "gift-projection."
• The first occurs when we compare our gifts to others, feel dissatisfied with what God gave us,
and become resentful or jealous of how God uses others.
• The second problem happens when you expect everyone else to have your gifts, do what
you're called to do, and feel as passionate about it as you do. The Bible says, "There are different
kinds of service in the church, but it is the same Lord we are serving" (1 Corinthians
12:5, NLT).
•
Sometimes spiritual gifts are overemphasized to the neglect of the other factors that God uses to shape
you for service. So keep in mind, your gifts reveal one part of God's will for your ministry, but not all of
it.

So keep in mind, your gifts reveal one part of God's will for your ministry, but not all of
it.
